Supper Lecture: Frank Baines

Wednesday 17 November — Sold out
6.45pm for 7pm. By Chris Pond.

Sir Frank Baines (1877-1933) trained under CR Ashbee . He lived and breathed the arts and crafts tradition, especially in his estates at Eltham Well Hall and Roe Green (Kingsbury) for the WW1 Ministry of Munitions. But he also contributed more widely to the war effort, and to the restoration of ancient buildings, on which he was a world authority, as Director of HM Works. Baines grew up in East London and lived at Loughton, where there are still three private houses by him. He was secretive and somewhat deceptive by nature. Dr Chris Pond has unravelled Baines’s professional and personal life and will present his findings at this event, believed to be the first-ever talk on this architect. At the Victorian Society, 1 Priory Gardens, London W4 1TT. Tube: Turnham Green, District line. Lecture £25 with complimentary supper afterwards. Please indicate any special dietary requirements. Booking required.

Event code: 1040.
