Coach Excursion & Christmas Lunch, Crewe Hall, Cheshire Edit this page

A coach excursion via two Sir George Gilbert Scott churches to the Crewe Estate, Cheshire followed by Christmas lunch at Crewe Hall including a tour of this High Victorian gem; Saturday 2nd December 2017

We shall board a Yelloway coach at Store Street, under Manchester Piccadilly Train Station at 8.45 am for a prompt departure by 9.00 am.

Proceeding first to St John, Sandbach Heath (1861). This commission almost certainly came Scott’s way as a result of his work on Poor Law institutions. This church has a well proportioned stone exterior with central spire. The interior has dates and inscriptions carved in stone, glass by Clayton & Bell and very fine chancel woodwork which has been recently restored. Then on to St Michael, Crewe Green (1858). This church is very different in style to St John - exterior blue and red brick on a sandstone plinth. Apsidal chancel and octagonal turret on north-east corner. The west end has a rose window. Interior also in brick. This church, on the Crewe estate, was built for the 3rd Lord Crewe who commissioned both Victorian restorations of Crewe Hall - originally a very large Jacobean house built for Sir Randolph Crewe. It was restored in early Victorian times by Edward Blore but it was then gutted by fire in 1866. Edward Middleton Barry was then commissioned to undertake a very major phase of restoration. Under Barry, craftsmen such as J.G. Crace and the glass workers of Clayton & Bell created the Grade I listed hall we see today. The richly decorated chapel is both exquisite and unusual – not least in remaining consecrated. Crewe Hall is now a four star rated hotel with extensive (and exclusive) Wedding and Event business.

The tour of Crewe Hall will be followed by Lunch at 2.00pm.
We aim to be back in Manchester by 6.00 pm
Cost: £45.00 per person including morning coffee, four course Christmas lunch, tour of Crewe Hall and return coach travel from Manchester.
