Victorian Society secures listing for eye-catching former bank in Gateshead

A second success this summer in the north of England for the listings team is the former Lloyds Bank at 15 West Street, Gateshead.

This monumental building in the Edwardian Baroque style, adjacent to the town hall, has been listed at Grade II. The building replaced an earlier bank on the site, and was designed by George Reavell Jnr of Alnwick. It was constructed in 1914 in sandstone ashlar. Reavell designed other banks and buildings, several of which are listed, including the Grade II Lloyds Bank in Alnwick. His other designs include well-regarded castles, country houses, coaching inns, and other public buildings. The Gateshead bank retains its original gilt signage, with good surviving interior features, including a complete banking hall with original plasterwork and joinery. Read the list entry here.
