New approach needed for historic Salford lodge

Local campaigners calling for urgent repairs to a Salford cemetery lodge have been given the backing of the Victorian Society.

The Grade II-listed lodge, situated near the entrance to Weaste Cemetery on Cemetery Road, dates back to 1866 but is now derelict and surrounded by security fencing.

'Long-term dereliction can be disastrous for historic structures and the clock is certainly ticking for Weaste Cemetery lodge', said Chris Costelloe, Conservation Adviser for the Victorian Society. 'This small but attractive building desperately needs a viable new use or the last surviving structure in this nationally important cemetery will be lost.'

The landscape of Weaste Cemetery is also Grade II-listed and is an interesting example of an early municipal cemetery, as Salford was one of the first authorities to realise that urban churchyards could no longer provide enough burial space. The formal garden layout of the cemetery still survives, although its three Victorian chapels have been demolished.

The Society believes Salford City Council must re-roof the lodge to prevent its condition getting worse and then take a fresh look at its future.

Mr Costelloe added: 'Elsewhere in the country cemetery lodges have been successfully adapted for use as homes or offices. In Weaste Cemetery a visitor centre or café could also be considered.'

The lodge has recently been nominated for the Victorian Society's Top Ten Endangered buildings campaign, which aims to highlight the problems facing many of our historic buildings.
