Special Casework Appeal

The Victorian Society invites you to contribute to our Special Casework Appeal - help us continue to fight major campaigns such as Smithfield effectively.

Many of you will already have heard that Eric Pickles has recently rejected proposals to redevelop much of Smithfield Market in London, following a public inquiry in February on plans opposed by the Victorian Society and SAVE.

This is the Society’s greatest victory for a number of years.  Given the prominence of the site, the major interests on the other side and the rarity of public inquiries on heritage matters, this was an important test of conservation policies.  It is good news not only for Smithfield but for our towns and cities nationwide, demonstrating that the planning system can protect our heritage even where major commercial and political interests are involved.

However, during the last year the Society has incurred heavy costs in its special campaigns at Smithfield and at Jessops Hospital in Sheffield

The Chair of the Victorian Society, Hilary Grainger, invites you help our work campaigning to save major buildings such as these by making a contribution to the Victorian Society’s Special Casework Appeal.

To continue to fight major campaigns such as Smithfield effectively we need your help.
