Walk: Merton Park, “The Original and Most Unique Garden Suburb”, led by Tony Woolfenden

Tony Woolfenden leads a walk around John Innes’ Merton Park estate, “the original and most unique garden suburb” (to quote the estate company’s advertisements). We will see:

  • the leafy holly-lined roads of the Merton Park estate by developer and village squire John Innes;
  • villas and cottages by his estate architect H G Quartermain;
  • outstanding Arts and Crafts houses by successor architect J S Brocklesby;
  • and St Mary’s Church (medieval with Ferrey aisle and Morris glass).
  • Plus an Arts and Crafts bandstand, Nelson’s pew and the homes of artist Frederick Shields and suffragette Rose Lamartine Yates.

Two miles, level walking. Light refreshments provided.

Tony Woolfenden is a member of the Society and its Lead Listing Caseworker (voluntary). He has led previous walks in London’s Victorian suburbs.
