Become a Trustee of the Victorian Society

Are you passionate about the architecture and design of the Victorian and Edwardian eras? Do you have experience in leadership, strategy, governance, heritage, finance, fundraising, digital or planning? The Victorian Society is seeking new trustees to join its Board and help shape its future.

The Victorian Society is the national charity devoted to protecting, promoting and celebrating Victorian and Edwardian architecture and the wider historic environment for the benefit of everyone across England and Wales. As one of the National Amenity Societies, we have a statutory role in the planning process and a long, distinguished record of campaigning, advising and inspiring public enthusiasm for this vital period of our built heritage.

As a trustee, you will help guide the charity’s strategy and oversee its governance, finances and activities. Trustees act as ambassadors for the Society, working with fellow board members, staff and supporters to strengthen the organisation and advance its mission. The Board usually meets six times a year, with occasional additional committee meetings.

We are looking for people who share a strong commitment to the heritage and architectural sector and who can bring a strategic and collaborative approach to Board work. Experience in leadership or expertise in areas such as conservation, planning, fundraising, finance, law, communications or digital development would be valuable, but enthusiasm and sound judgment are just as important. You do not need prior trustee experience – what matters most is your willingness to contribute and to learn.

This voluntary role offers the chance to make a meaningful contribution to heritage preservation and celebration, working with an engaged and supportive team. We have a friendly Board with highly motivated trustees and a dedicated and knowledgeable staff team. Reasonable expenses incurred in carrying out trustee duties will be reimbursed.

The Society is committed to maintaining a broad range of skills, experiences and perspectives on the Board in order that we keep the Society fresh and relevant to the challenges and opportunities confronting Victorian and Edwardian heritage.

To express your interest, please send a short statement (no more than two sides) outlining your background, motivation, and what you would bring to the Board, to [email protected]. You are welcome to request an informal conversation with the Chair, James Grierson, or one of the other trustees. Applications need to be submitted by 18th November 2025, with short-listed applicants being invited for interview early in December. New trustees will join the board as Observers in the New Year in advance of their appointments being ratified at the AGM in September.
