St Bartholomew’s soaring tower and spire, together with its apsidal chancel, are an impressive sight high above Ruswarp’s village high street. The church opened in 1869 as one of a group of new churches and parishes created within the ancient parish of Whitby. The designer was the leading regional architect Charles Armfield. The church closed for regular public worship in 2020. In 2021 the team applied for listing, recognising the outstanding quality of the building’s fine proportions, refined detailing and powerful presence, all amazingly produced for £3,052, including the land and original fittings. Inside was a beautiful painted chancel roof, stained glass by Mayer and Company, a richly carved font, a rood beam carved by Robert (Mouseman) Thompson with his signature mouse in the detail.
