Victory for St George’s Hall in Deal!

St  George’s Hall in Deal, Kent

We’re delighted to share that St George’s Hall in Deal has been saved from demolition.

Thanks to the tireless efforts of local residents, the Deal Society, Deal Town Council and the Victorian Society, councillors on Dover District Council have refused plans that would have resulted in the destruction of this locally significant 1871 former school building at the heart of the Middle Street Conservation Area.

Our objections highlighted overdevelopment, loss of amenity, harm to heritage and technical shortcomings in the application, as well as the opportunity that the existing building represents. Councillors listened, and the outcome shows how powerful informed community action can be. This handsome Victorian building is part of Deal’s architectural story, and, with care, can continue to be.
