Day School: Victorian and Edwardian Justice, Crime and Punishment in the West Midlands

This year’s Day School will explore crimes committed and punishments imposed during the Victorian and Edwardian eras across the region. Angela Coulter will discuss Birmingham’s first coroner; Corrine Brazier of Birmingham Police Museum will look at rogues, villains and even Peaky Blinders; Tracey Blundell will turn to crime and punishment in the Black Country; and, after lunch, Dr Kiran Mehta will examine prison labour in the Victorian era. Rob Firman, conservation architect on Birmingham’s Victoria Law Courts, will conclude with a look behind the work to modernise and conserve Aston Webb’s Grade I listed building.
The cost includes tea/coffee at registration, mid-morning refreshments and a buffet lunch. Vegetarian options are always available; please notify us of any other dietary requirements.
There will be a book stall with books from our speakers and other relevant titles. Cash or cheques only as we do not have a card machine.
