This guided walk could be described as a journey through time – we will trace the social and industrial development of the South Pennine village of Marsden, in the Colne Valley, and see evidence of these developments in its historic buildings, with Roman, Medieval and other historic transport routes encountered on the journey. On this walk we will follow Marsden’s social and industrial development through Victorian period and see how this is evidenced through its buildings. Participants will be introduced to important Marsden men and women who contributed to its social, political and industrial development and the fight for women’s rights.
Route: Village-centred circular walk, generally flat with slight inclines, but care needed when crossing roads or where there is an absence of pavements.
Refreshments and toilet facilities: Marsden boasts a number of cafes and pubs with toilets for customer use. There are no longer any public toilets in the village.
Travel: Marsden has a station with trains running hourly from York/Leeds and Manchester – do check train times as the TransPennine upgrade is affecting weekend services. If travelling by car, please do allow time for parking as on-street parking can be difficult in the village centre. There is a large fee-paying car park by the train station.
