This walk between Salford’s two stations passes most of the city’s best Victorian buildings, including the former Town Hall, Education Offices, Museum and Art Gallery plus St Philip’s Church and Salford RC Cathedral. It also includes a Georgian terrace and some fine Edwardian buildings, as well as the modern campus of Salford University featuring examples of 20th and 21st century design. It gives the opportunity to view the juxtaposition of buildings of many styles and all periods from 1800 to the present day, reflecting the changing life of the city over the past 200 years.
The walk is led by Dr Joanne O’Hara, Strategic Heritage Lead for Salford City Council. She is an architectural historian by training who, since completing her PhD, has worked in a number of academic, curatorial, and commercial roles.
