The Victorian
The Victorian is the illustrated magazine for the members of The Victorian Society. It comes out three times a year, in March, July and November. It is edited by Jeremy Musson, a former Architectural Editor of Country Life (1997-2008) and a former caseworker for the Society in the early 1990s, who is an author, heritage consultant and author. He took over in 2017 from Michael Hall, former editor of The Burlington and author of George Frederick Bodley and the Later Gothic Revival in Britain and America (2014). The Victorian is designed by Andrew Sidford.
The Victorian is published with the events sheet which covers events and lectures, and the July issue contains the Annual Report. The magazine covers a variety of aspects of the world of Victorian and Edwardian architecture and art. The main features vary considerably in subject matter, often exploring quite different themes in different issues, the work of specific architects or different parts of England and Wales, or thematic subjects like the seaside.
There are other regular features, an letter from the Director, the casework report, written by the casework team, Dr Moses Jenkins’ advice on maintaining Victorian and Edwardian buildings, a case study written by a conservation architect on a recent successful restoration or conservation project, book reviews, often with special book offers, and a news section which also looks at exhibitions and other events. Many of the contributors are members of the Society, recognised national experts, as well as younger members and active Young Victorians. Recent contributors include Professor Andrew Saint, Sir Simon Jenkins, Blanche Girouard, Ken Powell, Dr John Goodall, Dr Olivia Horsfall Turner and Dr Kathryn Ferry. Recent covers have included watercolours by Ptolemy Dean and Matthew Rice. The Editor is always happy to hear suggestions for articles and news items, [email protected]
