On Saturday the 3rd of September join the The Victorian Society in Wales and learn how you can help save Welsh heritage at our first Welsh Built Heritage Day.

Don’t miss your chance to see Griff Rhys Jones in conversation with Dr Greg Stevenson about his personal experiences of fighting to preserve architectural heritage, hear about the saving of Gwrych Castle, the real star of “I’m a celebrity… Get me out of here! and much more at the first ever Welsh Heritage Day in Cardiff on 3rd September 2022.

Griff Rhys Jones, The Victorian Society President, said: ‘Wales was totally transformed in the19th century. Coal, slate and industry created an international economic powerhouse that left a legacy of amazing buildings – chapels, theatres, miners’ institutes, great houses, industrial archaeology and more. Yet today this heritage is too often underappreciated, forgotten and decaying. Welsh Heritage Day will give the public the tools they need to change that. Book your tickets today!’

Join the The Victorian Society and leading figures in Welsh heritage and architecture to discover how you can help tackle the challenges of caring for our buildings and monuments, great and small, in 21st century Wales. Consider how the Welsh government, planning and listing systems protect our historic buildings and structures. Learn about the The Victorian Society’s legal role as guardian of Victorian and Edwardian architecture.

Welsh Heritage Day includes lunch when you can meet the The Victorian Society’s conservation advisers for Wales, Connor McNeill and Tom Taylor. They will explain how the The Victorian Society can help you save your local buildings from demolition, inappropriate redevelopment or just sheer neglect. Browse heritage organisations’ stalls and meet fellow heritage and Welsh history experts and enthusiasts.

The afternoon starts with Griff Rhys Jones, TV comedian, heritage broadcaster, national treasure and President of the The Victorian Society, in conversation with TV’s Dr Greg Stevenson, about his personal experiences of fighting to preserve architectural heritage and why it is so vital to all of us.

The focus then shifts to effective campaigning. Speakers will talk about their experiences at three inspiring projects: new UNESCO World Heritage Site the “Slate Landscape of North-West Wales”, the Cyfarthfa Master Plan for a green vision for Merthyr Tydfil and the saving of Gwrych Castle, the real star of “I’m a celebrity… Get me out of here!” The Victorian Society hopes attendees will leave Welsh Heritage Day inspired and ready to fight for Wales’s architectural heritage!

Inspired by the talks, there will be limited places on a walk round some of Cardiff’s best of Victorian and Edwardian buildings.

Funding from Cadw has enabled Welsh Heritage Day to be run at a special reduced price.
