This October, we warmly congratulate Tim Bridges on completing twenty years of dedicated service to the Victorian Society as Conservation Adviser to our Birmingham & West Midlands Group.
Since his appointment in October 2006, Tim has brought an exceptional depth of knowledge, scholarship and professional expertise to our conservation work. A former Keeper of Archaeology and Collections Manager at Worcester City Museums, Tim has devoted much of his professional life to understanding, celebrating and protecting our architectural heritage.
Over these twenty years, his contribution to the work of our Casework Committee has been invaluable. Working closely with our late Casework Chairman, Joe Holyoak, and successive generations of volunteer caseworkers, Tim has provided thoughtful, authoritative advice on countless planning applications, threatened buildings and conservation issues across Birmingham and the wider West Midlands.
His achievements can be seen in the many historic buildings that have secured statutory listing and protection through the Society’s efforts. Among the notable successes to which he has contributed are the former Wellington Hotel in Birmingham, the magnificent offices of Samuel Heath & Sons, Darlaston Police Station, Tettenhall Court in Wolverhampton, the former Futurist Cinema, and King Edward VI Handsworth School for Girls, now protected at Grade II*. Most recently, in August 2026, Handsworth Park Lodge was added to the statutory list at Grade II.
These successes represent far more than entries on a national register. They are buildings whose architectural character, craftsmanship and historical significance can now be better safeguarded for future generations.
Behind every successful campaign lies considerable research, persistence, negotiation and sound professional judgement. Tim’s ability to work constructively with local authorities, Historic England and fellow conservation professionals has greatly strengthened the Society’s influence and effectiveness throughout the region.
His wider contribution to architectural history is equally distinguished. An accomplished author and lecturer, a recognised authority on historic churches, and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries since 2024, Tim brings both academic distinction and a genuine passion for the buildings we seek to protect.
On behalf of the Birmingham & West Midlands Group, I extend our heartfelt thanks to Tim for his dedication, wise counsel and enormously valued contribution throughout these twenty years.
The buildings we have helped to protect, the campaigns we have pursued and the successes we have celebrated owe much to his knowledge, commitment and unfailing support of our Casework Committee.
Many congratulations, Tim, on twenty remarkable years. Our Victorian and Edwardian architectural heritage is all the richer for your efforts.
