Walk: Florence Nightingale’s London Walk, Led by Debbie Pearson

Florence Nightingale was one of the most famous Victorians, known as the “Lady with the Lamp” and the “Mother of modern nursing”. But she was also a talented statistician, writer and campaigner.

Discover the life of Florence Nightingale through the places where she lived and worked; learn about her background, her influential neighbours and her love life, as we walk through the delightful districts of Mayfair and St James’s. This will include hotels and flats where she stayed temporarily or resided.

We will see the outside of the Reform Club and the London Library – and learn about their connections with Florence Nightingale, past and present.

And we will find out the answers to the questions: What does a luxury grocery shop have to do with the Crimean War? Where did Florence Nightingale write her most famous book? And where did she do her shopping?

This walk lasts approximately 2 hours, and will be conducted at a reasonable walking pace. It ends at the statue of Florence Nightingale, on Waterloo Place.

Debbie Pearson led her first walk on Florence Nightingale’s London in 2019. The bicentenary of Florence’s birth was 2020. Since she had done much research, which she and a colleague used to write a book called “Florence Nightingale’s London: An A to Z of the Lady with the Lamp”.

Debbie is a qualified City of Westminster Guide, and works with the Florence Nightingale Museum.
