Shades of the Evening: The Victorian Gothic Short Story

Gothic stories have come in and out of fashion since their origins in the late eighteenth century. This talk will briefly summarise the roots of the gothic story and the impact that seminal early works and classic novels of the genre have contributed along the way.

This talk, by June Lawrence (who leads the The Victorian Society’s short story reading group), will look at some of the writers producing short gothic fiction in the second wave of interest, during the latter part of the Victorian era.

Victorian and Edwardian Colonial Short Stories:
Part 1: Queen and Empress

Over two lectures, an overview of
colonial short stories published during the Victorian and Edwardian Era will be explored. These stories form part of a huge body of literature which variously described, promoted, or criticised Imperialism. This first lecture by June Lawrence (who leads the Victorian Society’s short story reading group), will explore the influence of colonialism in short stories of the British Isles and India.

Victorian and Edwardian Colonial Short Stories: Part 2: Dominions, Colonies and Protectorates

Having looked at the British Isles and India in part 1, this second lecture will survey short stories of colonial voyagers, squatters and settlers in Africa, Australia, British Malaya, Canada and New Zealand. These stories cover exploration and exploitation. There is adventure, excitement, greed, hardship and danger. As with the stories we looked at before, these tales also enable the reader to immerse themselves directly in different situations and aspects of this episode of history to gain an insider’s view of the facts and figures recorded in history books.
